Biography

John Richard Bramble is born on May 6, 1897 in Bungwahl, New South Wales, Australia. His parents are John William Bramble (1865-1919) and Helen Paterson (1866-1949). The birth is registered in Stroud, which is 76 kilometres north of Newcastle. But the birth is in Bungwahl where his parents farm. Bungwahl is near Myall Lake, which is about 100 kilometres north of Newcastle.

John is a farmer at Smiths Lake which lies just to the north of Myall Lake and only 14 km from Bungwahl. In 1923 he marries Florence Caroline Spooner (1892-1971) in Gloucester. Gloucester is about 100 kilometres to the west of Bungwahl. They have two children:

  • Iris Margaret Bramble + (1943) Victor Stanley Bramble 1922-1984
  • Geoffrey John Bramble 1927-2003

In 1942 John enlists with the Australian Army, serving as a private in the Volunteer Defence Force (VDC). The VDC is an Australian part-time volunteer military force of World War II modelled on the British Home Guard. Its job is to train for guerrilla warfare, collect local intelligence and provide static defence in each unit’s home area. John is discharged on September 30, 1945.

Florence dies in 1971 and is buried in the cemetery in Forster. Forster is on the coast, 165 kilometres north of Newcastle. John dies on December 27, 1985 at the age of 88 and is also buried in Forster.
