Eliza was born before 1863, based on the probated will of her enslaver, John Branch.
Eliza, her husband, Joshua, and their children, were slaves of John Branch (1782-1863), who was a Governor of North Carolina from 1817 to 1820, and the Governor of Florida Territory from 1844 to 1845. On 25 Feb 1863, Branch's estate was probated in Leon County, Florida.[1] Eliza, her husband, Joshua, and their children were some of the slaves Branch's estate gave to his granddaughter, Susan Branch (Bradford) Eppes (1846-1942). Susan received them on 10 Mar 1863. (Or Eliza was one of the slaves Branch's estate gave to his daughter, Sarah Harris (Branch) Hunter (1814-). Sarah received her on 25 Mar 1863.) It is not yet determined if they were enslaved on Branch's Live Oak Plantation in Leon County, Florida, or on his Walnut Hill property. Eliza's age was not given in the will. She may also have been enslaved during Branch's time in North Carolina.
