Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Margy (Branch) Hunter is a part of US Black heritage.

Margy was born before 1863, based on the probated will of her enslaver, John Branch.

Margy and her children were slaves of John Branch (1782-1863), who was a Governor of North Carolina from 1817 to 1820, and the Governor of Florida Territory from 1844 t0 1845. On 25 Feb 1863, Branch's estate was probated in Leon County, Florida.[1] They were some of the slaves Branch's estate gave to his daughter, Sarah Harris (Branch) Hunter (1814-). Sarah received them on 25 Mar 1863. It is not yet determined if Margy and her children were enslaved on Branch's Live Oak Plantation in Leon County, Florida, or on his Walnut Hill property. Margy 's age was not given in the will. They may also have been enslaved during Branch's time in North Carolina.
