Guilford was born before 1863, based on the probated will of his enslaver, John Branch.
Guilford was a slave of John Branch (1782-1863), who was a Governor of North Carolina from 1817 to 1820, and the Governor of Florida Territory from 1844 t0 1845. On 25 Feb 1863, Branch's estate was probated in Leon County, Florida.[1] Guilford was one of the slaves Branch's estate gave to L B Hopkins. L B received him on 13 May 1863. It is not yet determined if he was enslaved on Branch's Live Oak Plantation in Leon County, Florida, or on his Walnut Hill property. Guilford's age was not given in the will. He may also have been enslaved during Branch's time in North Carolina.
