Johann was the only son and probably youngest child of Hermann II, Markgraf (Margrave) of Brandenburg (of the Askanier or Ascanian dynasty), and his wife, Anna of Austria (von Österreich). He was born between 15 April and 16 August in 1302,[1]
He succeeded on the death of his father in 1308, as Johann V, Markgraf von Brandenburg but although he was placed under the guardianship of a cousin, Woldemar von Brandenburg, he was confined to the Castle of Spandau by his mother.
He married before 24 March 1317, as her first husband, Kathrina von Glogau,[2] daughter of Heinrich I, Duke of Glogau and his first wife, Mechtild von Braunschweig-Lüneburg.
Johann V died at Spandau on 24 March 1317 and was buried at Kloster Lehnin.[2] There was no issue with his wife, who remarried Johann von Holstein. .
