Biography

Sibella Brandon was born 1771 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Christopher Brandon and Elizabeth Graham. She married Joseph Tennison on February 5, 1795 in Rowen County, North Carolina. They had five children during their marriage.

From 1788-1790, they were recorded as living in Edgecombe County, North Carolina and then moving to Rowan County in the same state. Sometime before 1798, they moved to Sumner County, Tennessee and lived there until 1803, when they moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee. Information from the Rutherford County Historical Society said that Joseph and Sibella moved with Sibella’s father from North Carolina in 1802 with Charles Ready. Joseph was among those who signed the petition for Rutherford County, Tennessee to be created. Family stories are that Joseph and Sibella moved into Shelby County, Illinois where Joseph died. Sibella moved back to Tennessee before her death in 1849, probably to be with the large Brandon family at Readyville.
