Sarah (Brandon) Pettibone's father was a colorful figure who was born in Donegal, Ireland, and fled Ireland as a young man after participating in an insurrection. In the early 1770s he lived in South Carolina. There he served in General Francis Marion's Cavalry at Cowpens and King's Mountain. In 1782, after the cavalry unit was disbanded, Gerard Brandon went to Mississippi and settled Selma Plantation near Natchez. He died in 1823.
