Pierre was the only son of Douwe and Anna Brandsma. Born in Pietermaritzburg on the 18th of December 1956 at Greys Hospital. Pierre was educated at Model infants Junior School, Athlone Government School and Alexandra High School. In 1974 Pierre was conscripted to the 4th Field Artillery in Potchefstroom where he did his basic training. He was then enlisted at Artillery School where he underwent leadership training and eventually was promoted to Lance Bombardier and finally to Bombardier. He spent the rest of his military training here either on the border training three month campers or new conscripts at 4th Field or 14th Field. On completion of his military training he started working at the Receiver of Revenue in Pietermaritzburg as a tax assessor. Here Pierre met Myrna Margaret Whitehead, born on the 13th of June 1959 in Pietermaritzburg. Pierre married Myrna on the 14th of October 1979 at the Voortrekker, Gemeente NGK Pietermaritzburg. In 1980 Pierre joined Gencor Mining, as a Learner Official at Burnside Colliery in Glencoe. Myrna and Pierre had three children one of which was born here. Bronwyn was born on the 26th of August 1981. Bronwyn was a premature baby and passed away on the same day. Pierre was transferred to Coalbrook Collieries at Sasolburg in 1982. In 1982 Pierre and Myrna had a son, Pierre Douwe born on the 5th of October in Vanderbjil Park. In his final year of studying as a Mining Engineer, Myrna bore him another son Ettienne, on the 2nd of September 1984 in Vanderbjil Park. In 1985 Pierre moved to SASOL at Sigma Colliery in Sasolburg. He worked as a shift boss and then Technical Assistant Mining. He then moved back to Pietermaritzburg in 1987 to Join Anglo Alpha at Hippo Quarries as Production Manager. After a year he moved to Centurion and became General Manager at Blasting & Excavating’s Bronkhorstspruit Quarry and Durban Roodepoort Deep’s dump gold washing plant. He left the mining industry in 1989 and started his own financial advisory business, Key Financial Consultants. He presently still runs the business. Pierre is a keen sportsman and has tried his hand at many sports, Boxing he was Natal’s Junior Light heavy weight amateur Champion, Hang Gliding: came second in the Natal Championships at Otto’s Bluff in 1979, Second in the Inter Provincials in Cape Town 1979, Played for Northerns, Natal and Easterns Masters Baseball. Keen Fisherman having caught a 7.5Kg Tiger fish in Kahora Bassa, and many fish Deep sea in Mozambique where he has a resort. He is also a keen hunter.
