Biography

He was born in 1845, one of six children of Antony Brandt and Arenlje Theile.

Jan immigrated to Newport, Rhode Island from Germany before 1870 and opened a successful gardening and florist business. As Jan is considered a female name in the Anglo English world, he took the name of John. The 1870 census shows him living in Middletown, Newport, Rhode Island at age 25 with his occupation listed as gardener.

He then returned to Germany to marry his fiance and asked his brother Arend Brandt to come to the U.S. and run his the business during his absence. Arend immigrated to Newport in 1872. Jan did not return to the U.S. after his finance's father refused to let her leave Germany.
