Biography

It is not known for certain where Dempsey Braswell died. Perhaps it was in Nash Co., NC or Smith Co., TN. We do know that Dempsey's sisters Lucretia Braswell (m Wm Williams) and Rhoda Braswell (m Jesse Powell) died there and that his brother Robin was there before moving on to Wilcox/Marengo counties Alabama. We know that Archibald Griffin Braswell, who died in Smith Co., TN about 1833, is the son of Dempsey Braswell and Elizabeth Griffin because of an 1811 deed in Nash Co., NC where Dempsey identifies his son Archibald Braswell who is no doubt named after his maternal uncle, Archibald Griffin.

Research Notes

Estate records have not yet been found for Dempsey or his wife, but we know they had at least one proved son, and the census records suggest many children. Some of us worked together to logistically place unidentified younger Braswells who were in the Smith/DeKalb TN area as children of Dempsey and his brother, Robin (Robert). In 1820 in Smith county, there was an elderly Elizabeth Brazil, most likely the widow of Dempsey, and Aaron and Robert are believed to be sons of Dempsey and Elizabeth. (There is a Richard who is believed to be the son of John Braswell and Rebecca Pruitt, due to records kept by Diana Braswell and Richard Smith's family.)
