James Bratcher was born in 1918 to Wiliam Hunt Bratcher and Ethel Mae Branham in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. He attended Forest Avenue High School in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. He began military service on 12 July 1944 and served as a Private First Class in the US Army during World War II.[1] He died on Corregidor in the Philippines, on 21 Feb 1945[2] His two children never knew their father.

His name is on the memorial at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Philippines.[3] He received a Purple Heart Medal and Bronze Star Medal as well as other awards.[4]
