Biography

Esau J. Bratcher was the son of Mahue or Mayhugh Bratcher and his first wife Artemetia Harrison, the daughter of Greenberry Harrison and Lydia Bozorth. Esau and his twin brother, Jacob Sherman Bratcher, were born on November 6, 1867 in Grayson County, Kentucky. Their mother died 18 months later on May 12, 1869. She was buried in the Hopewell Church Cemetery in Grayson County. Her parents were buried there in later years.

In 1870, while their father was working in Short Creek with his brother-in-law, Christopher Columbus Harrison, the twins were living in Caneyville with their Aunt Elizabeth Harrison Bratcher, the widow of Presley Bratcher. It is probable that Mahue visited his children as often as possible during that time. Mahue then married Sarah Ann Layman as his second wife about 1871 or 1872. The 1880 Census of Grayson County shows the twins living with Mahue and Sarah, and their half-brothers and sisters: Lydia F., Joseph, Mary J. and Charles.

According to Mayhugh Bratcher descendant, Larry DaSo of Georgia, Esau was married three times. His first wife was Molly Ellen Nichols. She was born 16 Feb, 1869 and died 25 Oct, 1898. His second wife was named Effie (surname unknown). His third wife was Mary Jane (Elder) Cook, the daughter of John Elder and Sarah Jane Bratcher and widow of Henry Cook. They were married on January 17, 1920. She was born April 8, 1873 and died at the age of 88 years and 4 days on April 12, 1961. He died 11 days later in Daviess County, Kentucky at the age of 93 years, 5 months and 17 days on April 23, 1961. They are both buried in the Vol Layman Cemetery near Millwood, Grayson County, Kentucky.
