Biography

William Bradshaw was born about 1690 probably in Henrico County, Virginia. He married Judith Scruggs about 1712. [1] [2] William was the executor of the will of his father in law Charles Scruggs. [3]

The land in the will of Charles Scruggs came to him through his marriage to Mary (Field) Jones, the mother of Judith Scruggs. William Bradshaw divided this land with the other Jones and Scruggs heirs in 1720. [4]

William and Judith sold 228 acres of land in Henrico County in 1733. This was the land inherited from Judith's mother Mary. [5]

William made his first land acquisition on his own in 1733, for 390 acres of land between Deep Creek and Muddy Creek, in what is now Cumberland County. [6]

In 1741, William gave 200 acres on the North Fork of Deep Creek to John Robinson who had married his daughter Anne Bradshaw. [7]

In 1745, William was granted 800 acres on both sides of Deep Creek.[8]

William and Judith became the parents of at least eight children. These children were Temperance, Field, Charles, Josiah, Anne, Obedience, John, and William. [9]

William died intestate prior to 15 September 1747 in Goochland County, Virginia. [10] His burial location is unknown.

Children of William Bradshaw and Judith Scruggs, daughter of Charles Scruggs and his wife Mary Field:

  1. Temperance Bradshaw, born 1713 – died 1737; married Wiltshire Marrin. [11]

Research Notes

There is no actual evidence for the name William Larner Bradshaw in Henrico County Virginia during the 1690's to early 1700's. All deeds, wills and other records show the name as just William Bradshaw. The name William Larner Bradshaw appears only in unsourced family trees on Ancestry and Family Search. It is probably a conflation of the names of the two brothers William Bradshaw and Larner Bradshaw. William Bradshaw and Larner Bradshaw appear to have been the sons of John Bradshaw and his wife Elizabeth, whose maiden name is still in question. Evidence has been located for seven children of William Bradshaw and Judith Scruggs. More work still needs to be done for documentation of a daughter Temperance and for the child listed as Tombin Bradshaw. The surname has used various spellings over the years including Bradshew and Bratcher.

William was born in 1690. He passed away in 1747. William and Judith lived on the north side of the James River in Virginia on land she inherited from her mother's family (the Field's) and land that was purchased from other members of the Field family. William was a tobacco farmer who, at one time, owned 1,530 acres in Cumberland County, Virginia. Judith was the daughter of Charles Scruggs and Mary Field.[13]

Name should be Bradshaw. It’s Bradshaw in all sources cited. The name change to. Bratcher didn’t come until at least one generation later.

Do you have copies of these or perhaps a transcription of what they say?

Based on the dates, this one (Bedford County, Virginia Deed Book 3, p. 67) is more than likely for William (Bradshaw-675) since (Bradshaw-676 died before 1747 and wasn't in Bedford Co.

(Deed Book 2 includes deeds dated in 1762, so book 3 should be at least that late if not later)

Well yeah, they are on the other profile Bradshaw-676. Lol.

Actually they are not on Bradshaw-676. I wrote the bio for Bradshaw-676 and added the sources. My mistake, I shouldn't have included Henrico County Record Book II, 1718-1726, p 481 in the original question, because I do have that one added to 676.

And yes I do look through those old deed books and court records and transcribe them. That is where we find the evidence to source these profiles.

These other 3 are not on Bradshaw-676 and I do not have them in my files. That is why I was curious to see exactly what is mentioned. ↑ Mentioned in: Henrico County, Virginia Court Orders, 1737-1746, p. 15, Dec Ct. 1737 ↑ Mentioned in: Bedford County, Virginia Deed Book 3, p. 67 ↑ Henrico County, Virginia Minute Book 1719-1724, p. 335

Thanks, I hope it is helpful.. It took me a while to learn how to use the catalog, but once I got it a whole new world opened up. There are so many more records that can be found that way as opposed to using their search engine. Many can be viewed from home, but some require a visit to a family history center.

I’m doing the best with what I have available to me. I searched for these people with the search engine, it came up with the Rootweb website. I almost never use Rootsweb as a source unless I have to. I was going down the list of the genealogy it gave and comparing it with existing wikitree entries. Everything was correct with cross reference, and the information was sourced on the rootweb page, so I felt it was okay to use it. I tried to find the actual documents, but they are behind a paywall. You either have to buy the book or subscribe to the website that has the Virginia Genealogist. Since, this was a duplicate profile, it didn’t look like anyone had been working on it for a long time. I didn’t know that the other duplicate profile existed. So, what I figured I would do is trust the Rootsweb sources and just put them on there for someone else to come by behind me and follow up on.

Not really a problem. I just thought you might have them at hand so I could read what they show. I will see if I can find them in the Familysearch catalog. They have digitized many of these old records .

I’m almost positive they are not on there. I looked for them. I found other records from the same area around the same time, but I couldn’t find those. I think it’s because they are only found in that book, and that book still has a copyright. But I could be wrong. When I was working on this profile, I found yours, and realized everything I was doing was a waste of time. So, I just tried to merge it and be done with it. I’m glad that didn’t happen, though, because now you’ll possibly have more information on Temperance and the other children, I’m new to wikitree and am still learning, so lesson learned there. Good luck.

I don't think what you are doing is a waste of time. We all do what interests us as individuals. I'm one of the weird ones who enjoys dusty court house basements and spending time in libraries. Not everyone does. Family search's search engine leaves a lot to be desired. It took a while for me to get the hang of using their catalog.

As you spend time on Wiki be sure to take a peek at the G2G forum. If you need help on something or have questions you would like answered just ask there. There are many knowledgeable members there who enjoy helping others research. We were all new at one time and none of have all the answers. That's why this is a place to share and collaborate with others.

All the information I put on this profile came from the Rootsweb Source 1. I didn’t look them up. I didn’t know how to find them. I’m guessing they could be found on familysearch.org if you really want to look through a bunch of old deed books with barely legible cursive handwriting.

Bratcher-264 and Bradshaw-676 appear to represent the same person because: There’s a whole set of identical profiles that are going to need to be merged. Check the details, these are the same people.

Hey Pip, you and Robert are cousins! Wm Bradshaw and Judith Scruggs are common anc, Robt descends from son Wm Larner.
Bradshaw-3343 and Bradshaw-676 appear to represent the same person because: Same spouse same death date, same child in son John. Bradshaw -3343 has no sources
Bradshaw-2078 and Bradshaw-676 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates, same wife, same children. No conflict with parents. Profile has been updated and sourced. No evidence in original records of middle name Larner. Please take a look at the sources and if you agree these profiles are for the same man, please approve the merge.
Removed John C Bradshaw as father of Bradshaw 2078. No evidence and wrong location
William Bradshaw who married Judith Scruggs died prior to 15 Sep 1747 in Goochland County, Virginia. No evidence of a middle name (Larner)

Goochland County Virginia Order Book 6, p 375, on 15 Sep 1747 " Judith Bradshaw comes into Court and makes Oath that William Bradshaw deceased died without any will so far as she knows or believes and on her motion a certificate is granted her for obtaining letters of Administration in due form. Eric, will you help me straighten this out please? Can you post a source?

The parents of this profile were John and Elizabeth Bradshaw. It is not known whether Elizabeth was a "Pleasants" or a "Harper" with any certainty. There are no records for a "William Larner Bradshaw", only for a William and a Larner who are two separate people. It is also extremely unlikely this line is descendant from Ralph Bradshaw and Rachel Penn, and looking at the records available it seems most likely this profiles father "John" is the son of William. How did a Bratcher sneak into this line.
