Ada immigrated to New Zealand on 12 June 1885, a 17-year-old servant from Warwickshire, England. Her assisted travel cost £15 (GBP) and the ship was called "Kaikoura".[1] Still single, she gave birth to daughter Violetta Sarah less than a year after she arrived, but the child died eight months later [2] On 18 Apr 1892 in Dannevirke, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, Ada married George Francis Scott Murch, [3] They raised 6 children together, the 7th Irene having died as an infant. Gilbert, the 8th, was born in 1905 and George is named as the father [4] but this does not appear to be likely given family events in the years immediately prior. George Murch had in fact disappeared in 1903, after baby Irene had died and married a 2nd women , Rebecca Ruby Overend [5] Ada Lucy Murch applied for dissolution of her marriage with George Francis Murch on the ground of desertion. Mr Young appeared for petitioner. Ada Lucy stated that George was at the time of the wedding a member of the firm of Murch and Parbrook electricians, of Wellington and the hitching-up- took place in April, 1892; George disappeared from view in July five years ago, and although a WARRANT WAS ISSUED FOR HIS ARREST, the police were unable to execute the warrant. Prior to the warrant being issued, a maintenance order had been issued against George on account of his children. Ada Lucy had maintained all six of the children for a time, but subsequently, the State took charge of four of them and she retained possession of two. Inspector Ellison gave evidence of the issue of the warrant: It was believed by the police that George had gone to San Francisco. A decree nisi was granted, with custody of the two children and of the latter four if the Government consented.[6] Ada Lucy remarried, to James H Fraser in 1909. [7] She passed away in 1954 [8]
