Biography

Christian's full name was Johann Christian Konrad Brauer. He was from Hanover Twp, Southern Germany near the border of Switzerland. He was a shoemaker by trade operating a shop in Germany. He had boys serving as apprentices. The boys slept in a loft over the shop. When the boys went to bed at night, the ladder was taken away to keep them in the loft.

Christian came to America in 1888. He left three young children in Germany with relatives: William age 9, Fredrick age 7 and Otto age 5. Prior to leaving a picture was taken in the city of Peine, Gropern 23 with the three sons.

In America Christian operated a shoemaker's shop on the 700 block of Prospect Avenue in Scranton, PA. A picture of Christian in front of the shop holding a hammer is on this profile page. The 1928-1953 25th anniversary booklet of the Trinity Evangelical and Reform Church, Prospect Ave. at Beech St. Scranton, PA lists Christian Brauer as a charter member.

Christian was small in stature.

Christian's children with his first wife Karolina were: Adolph b October 9, 1870, Anna, Minnie, Frieda, Bertha, Louis, Henry

Christian's children with his second wife, Minnie Backhaus were: William, Fredrick Wilhelm b March 18, 1880 d August 4, 1957 and Otto. Minnie died in childbirth.

(More children need to be added via findagrave sources. There is a Minnie Hanstein listed as a child who died at age 76. This was posted by Carol Brotzman. And indeed when I looked at family history notes, it says, "two other sisters came from Germany and settled in the Philadelphia area, Minnie and Bertha. One married a Mr. Post. Related to the moving company Post. Faye maintained some contact with their families.")
