Biography

Johannes (John Brown) Braun and his wife Catharine, came from the Palatinate, Germany, to this country, on October 20, 1752, they arrived on the ship Duke, the captain was Daniel Montpelier. Johannes and Catherine settled in Berks County, north of the Blue Mountain, in one of the fertile valleys between what is now the Summit and Auburn, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.

He was a veterinary surgeon. His signature to a deed to this land, 1804, is recorded in the Berks County court house.

Johannes and Catherine had three sons, all had the first name of John (Johannes). There was John, John Adam and John George.

The Black Horse Hotel, Wayne Township, which has been in possession of the Brown family for several generations, stands upon part of the original tract.

Johannes name appears on the original list of subscribers to the St. Paul's Lutheran and Reformed Church, South Manheim Township, (Summer Berg), as having given ten shillings to the erection of this church, in 1782

Johannes, and two sons, John and John Adam were in the Revolutionary War. [2]

On his return John Adam brought with him a twelve pound cannon ball which is a relic in the Brown family today.
