Biography

Margje's last name is listed both as Bravert and as Kranst. It’s hard to know who Margje’s parents were: Jan was a pretty common name in the area, and being Mennonite there are no children’s baptisms listed for them. No Braverts or Cransts are listed in the Giethoorn records until the time of Margje, and her place of residence isn’t listed in the marriage record.[1]

No other Braverts or Cransts can be found in this area at this time, although there were some with the last name of Krans / Crans. It's possible the family came from Giethoorn but Margje was the last with this name. A few possibilities exist for Margje's parents thanks to the 2 names of Margje's daughters, Geertjen and Hendrikje:

1. In Giethoorn, Jan Coops of Giethoorn married Hendrickien Andries from Nijeveen on Dec 30 1670.

2. In Giethoorn, Jan Wolters of Giethoorn married Geertien Tijmens Regelinck from Wanneperveen on Jan 1670.

3. In Giethoorn, Jan Sijmons of Giethoorn married Hendrickien Jans from Giethoorn on Jan 19 1668.

4. Hendrina Claesen Crans, daughter of Claes Andries and Willemtjen Pieters, was born around 1658 and married Jan Arrijens in Suirbeek, Vollenhove around 1680.

5. There was a Jan Pieters Crans who was baptized in Vollenhove in 1679, one generation too late to be our Margje's father. No marriage is listed for him.

6. In Amsterdam, Jan Bravert and Marritie Claes had children in Amsterdam in the 1690's. It's a little late to be our Jan, but it's the only Bravert family I found in all of the Netherlands. A grandson or great-grandson of theirs was a cabin boy on the ship Leeuwerik in 1741, sailing to Batavia and the Cape. He died on his 502nd day of employment, in 1743.
