Biography

Caroline ("Carrie") Brawley was 1 year old in 1860 and resided with her parents William and Margaret Brawley in Lawrence County, Ohio. Her father was working as a "Boat Hand."^[1] The Brawleys came to Ohio from Beaver, Clarion County, Pennsylvania where they were living in 1850. William Brawley was working as a miner. ^[2]

Carrie was listed as 11 years old, born Ohio and resided in the household of her father, William Brawley, in the 1870 census for Lawrence County, Ohio. Her mother had apparently died between 1860-1870. ^[3]

When she was 19 she married Frank Gilkey on 15 May 1880 at Lawrence County, Ohio.^[4]

In the 1910 census Frank Gilkey's widow, Carrie, and their son Howard were residing in Campbell County, Kentucky. ^[5]

Carrie (age 79, born Ohio) was living with her son Howard and his wife Emma in the 1940 census of Campbell County, Kentucky. ^[6]

Carrie Gilkey, the widow of Frank Gilkey, was residing at 223 West 13th St in Newport, Kentucky when she died 9 July 1947. She was 86 years old. Her death certificate gives a birth date of 15 February 1861 in Ironton, Ohio. There is a mistake on the death certificate because her husband's father William Gilkey was mistakenly entered as her father.^[7]
