Biography

Charles William Bray was probably born in early 1830 to William, a Farmer, and Mary Bray, at Great Snoring, Norfolk, where he was baptized in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin on 22 February, 1830[1][[1]].

The 1841 Census recorded Charles Bray, 11, living on High Street in Great Snoring, Norfolk, with William Bray, 72 (his Grandfather?)[2].

The 1851 Census recorded William Bray, 21, living with his widowed mother, Mary, 45, Farmer, and siblings Susanna E., 11, Mary R., 4, Mary R., 8, Cristin J., 14, and Robert, 16, and Christopher Mallet, 22, School Master, Lodger, at Great Snoring, Norfolk, England[3].

Charles William Bray, Bachelor, Farmer, married Susan Thompson, Spinster, in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, at Great Snoring, Norfolk, on 6 October, 1853, after Banns on 26 June, 3 July and 10 July, 1853[4][5], George Henry Marsh, Rector, officiating[6]. Witnesses to the marriage were William Thompson, who made his mark, and Catherine Leeder (Bray) Mallet. The bride and groom both signed their own names, and so could presumably both read and write. The Groom's father, William Bray, was a Farmer, and the bride's father, John Thompson, a Farm Bailiff.

Charles and Susan Bray had 6 children:

  • William John, born ca. 1854;
  • Charles, born ca. September, 1856;
  • Robert, born ca. September, 1858;
  • Susannah Thompson, born the 4th Quarter, 1860; and
  • twins Katie Charlotte Thompson, and
  • Frederick Robert Thompson, born the 4th Quarter, 1869.

The 1861 Census of England recorded Charles Will., 38, Farmer 9 Acres, and Susan Bray, 28, Farmer's Wife, living with their children Will E., 6, and Charles, 4, both Scholars, Robert, 2, and Susana, 0, on Church Street in Great Snoring, Norfolk, England[7].

The 1871 Census recorded William, 40, Colliery Horse Keeper, and Susan Bray, Wife, 39, and their children W. John, 16, Solicitor Clerk, Charles, 14, Errand Boy, Fred Robt. T, 1, and Susan's sister, Charlotte Thompson, 25, Unm, all born Great Snoring except Fred, born Tethy (an error), living at Parkgate, Rawmarsh, Rotherham, Yorkshire, England[[2]].

William Bray died in the 1st quarter of 1872, aged 40, at Rotherham, Yorkshire, England[8].
