Les was very good at sport, he played and umpired football with his brother Frank. He and Brother Frank use to umpire football and travelled by motorcycle to and from different games in the surrounding towns when they lived in Brookton. Les lived mainly in Merredin, Kalgoorlie and Albany in WA and Pambula Beach in NSW. He had several occupations - as a Baker, Power Station hand, Miner, Leading Aircraftsman in the RAAF in the second World War, including a tour of duty in New Guinea, Power Station "Engine-driver" in Merredin and Foreman Linesman in the State Electricity Commission of WA.
A keen tennis player, golf player and trotting (harness racing) owner/driver in earlier years, Les's later recreational interests centred on lawn bowls and fishing. One trotting highlight was to win the "Caris Cup" in 1953 in Kalgoorlie, driving one of his trotters "Dawn Eileen". This Caris Cup was returned to the Goldfields Trotting Club by eldest son Kevin in September 2013. Les's trotting colours were Red with Green Diamonds.
His other horse was trotter Jeanalice. Les passed away while on holiday with Jean in the Exmouth Gulf. He was cremated at Karrakatta cemetery in Perth. His memorial plaque is in Canberra, ACT.
They have 4 children.
