Antoinia, Please do not create anymore profiles until you have contacted your mentor Carole Partridge. You have created at least 3 more duplicates today, which I will merge. Thanks,

Jacqueline

I'm a WikiTree mentor who has been assigned to help you. Please do not create any more profiles until we have a chance to begin working together.

The “dit” in the last name was a document, a letter from a guarantor given to a person changing parishes or military individuals from abroad, vouching for this individual as a good Christian for him marry in the Catholic Church, and “dit” was the guarantor’s last name. Children and grand-children would adopt this name thinking it was a title, especially since most were illiterate. The University of Montréal have samples of these old documents in their Archives.

Hi Antoinia, I've noticed quite a few duplicates you've created, probably caused by last name spelling differences. I am trying to find them and merge into the correct/approved last name at birth. These can be tricky so I completely understand you didn't intend to create duplicates! If you have any questions, please ask. Thanks for volunteering!

Edit: I've also noticed that the birth dates for some of these duplicate profiles are way off--making it impossible for the person to have been the parent or spouse of the one you've linked them to. These mistakes will be found by the error check program and someone will have to correct them. Please ask for help so you can help WikiTree be as accurate and friendly as possible. Thanks!

Hi Antonia,

Please see: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Name_Fields#Last_Name_at_Birth for the appropriate standards for Last Names at Birth. We don't use "dit" there. It goes in the Current or Other Last Name Field. Does that make sense? I'm happy to answer any questions you might have.

Thanks!

Hi Antoinia,

I see that you just did the Pre-1700 Self-Certification. That's great! This certification requires participation in a project related to the profiles you wish to edit. Is there a particular time period, location, or topic you're interested in? Maybe you have some historically-significant ancestors? Also, check out our Volunteer Hub to see our projects that really need new members!

Let me know! I can help you figure out if there's a project and introduce you to the project leaders. Welcome aboard!

You have been removing children from the family of Duguay-16. Do you have a source indicating that these are not his children?

Shirley

Thank you for the note on my profile. Any information you have on these individuals should go on their profiles along with citations about where you found the information.

Did you find it in a book? Another website??

Please take a look at the Sources help page. That will give you a good overview of how to add Sources to a profile.

Thanks, again!

Julie
