Hello! I'm interested in contacting members who share the same ancestors. I'm interested in finding an ancestor that fought in the Revolutionary War on the American side. I'm interested in finding out if I have any MicMac (from Canada and Northern Maine) relations. I'd like to include professions and jobs of my ancestors in my tree. I want accuracy in my tree. I'm interested in finding relations with MyHeritage DNA and AncestryDNA. I want to leave a living record of my family.

Hello Sheryl!

We are distant cousins. I just wanted to pop in and say hi and share trees, if you would like. I hope you are having a wonderful day. :)

Sheryl,

I’ve not heard back from you regarding the Military and War Project check-in for 21 days. The leader will remove you from the project for now.

If you’d like to rejoin at any stage you would be most welcome to do so by answering the G2G sign-up post here

Hi Sheryl,

I sent you a check-in message a week ago about the Military and War Project to ask you about your continued involvement but have not yet heard back from you. Do you still want to be in the project? If I don’t hear from you by the same time next week I’ll assume that you’ve moved on to other things but you’re most welcome to re-join the project at any time.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Best wishes,

Mary~ Project Coordinator, Military and War Project

Many thanks,

Hi Sheryl, I see you added Mary Drysdale as the wife of two very different John McCallums. One born in 1759 and the other born in 1850...

This doesn't seem to be very likely. You're also moving children around in the family (like Thomas, from a child of Isabella to Mary). But you're not adding sources, dates and locations to the profiles.

Three families with similar names, no sources, biographies or dates across 4 countries, three provinces and 150 years are going to be a hot mess if they get more mixed up. Before you make any additional changes, I think we need to stop and add biographies and sources.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for bringing this mistake to my attention. It doesn’t surprise me because I was glued to my computer until 5:00 AM. This research requires intense focus. I’m working with MyHeritage, Ancestry, FamilySearch, Geni, etc to get my profiles and sources correct. I’ll slow down and fix my mistakes. Thanks again. Sheryl

It's fine, I'll go through these profiles later today and fix anything. I'll let you know when I've finished.

Generally speaking, the most important, critical, thing is to add documentary sources whenever you edit a profile. If there aren't any good primary sources, please add research notes, so that people can understand the changes you've made. Writing a biography, and reading what is on the profile already, are also important skills. Looking at the totality of a person's life: where they were born, who they married, when and where they married and had children. These details will help avoid confusing people with similar names.

For instance both https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacCallum-115 and wikitree.com/wiki/McCallum-123 have enough biography written that it's clear who they were married to, where they lived, and who their children were.

Check out some of the WikiTree documentation here:

As an aside, MyHeritage, Ancestry and Geni can give you good research leads, but the trees on those sites don't count as primary sources. FamilySearch, obviously, has the best collection of free sources. You should, where possible, list these primary sources for births, deaths, marriages and censues.

As an example of why it's important to read biographies, and add details and sources as you go:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McCallum-304

You put him as the son of Mary Drysdale (born 1777) and John McCallum (born 1870). But Thomas was already the father of James (born 1740). Thomas clearly can't be the son of people who were as much as a hundred years younger than his own children.

Additionally, I've changed several parental status indicators from "confident" to "uncertain". When there are no sources to support a person's parents, except for MyHeritage or Ancestry trees, the relationship is unproven, at best.

Hi Sheryl! Thanks for working on our shared family tree.

I've changed the name of a profile for James Galbraith Robertson to "Unknown", because you didn't provide any sources, and in the biography of his son, it notes explicitly that Duncan's father, and birth details are unknown. If you have better information, and (most importantly!) sources, you can add them, and we can work on improving the profile and family tree.

If you want specific help with Canadian sources and biography writing, you can also join us at the Canada Project: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1177802/have-canadian-ancestors-interest-canada-come-canada-project

We do an informal training session on research and biography writing.

Hi Sheryl,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles that you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).
