Biography

Early Life

Samuel Perry Brezeale was born 20 Feb 1836 in Pickens County, the four of six children of Lucinda Brezeale all born between 1828 and 1841 and given her maiden name. The father of these children remains a mystery - in the 1840 census Lucinda is listed as the head of household and lives with her mother and children, with no male resident listed. By the 1850 census, Lucinda had married Robert Scott, her mother, and her children were living in his household.

First Marriage and Civil War

Samuel Perry married Sarah Ann Duncan (exact year unknown) and in the 1860 census they were still living in Pickens County and had two children, William Jefferson and John Mattison. Sometime between the 1860 census and the onset of the Civil War, they moved to Blue Pond, Alabama. Samuel Perry joined Co M 7th Regiment AL Calvary. He fought with the Confederacy until the war's end, surrendering with Joe Johnston's Army in Bentonville, NC, in April 1865.

After returning home, he and Ann had one more child George Washington. Ann passed away shortly after. Now a widower with a baby and three young boys, he decided to walk home to Pickens. The boys took turns riding the old white horse and the baby was carried in a tow sack. He came across a river too wide to cross (likely the Chattahoochee) and had to sell the horse for toll money, making the rest of the journey home on foot.
Perry Breazeale served in the United States Civil War.

Pickens and Second Marriage

Sameul Perry made his home about four miles west of Pickens near the Twelve Mile River. He married Sarah Martha Murphree (it was her family's land he settled on). They had six children together. Family lore tells that she intended for the land to be inherited by her children and not Samuel Perry's older children (the land is still owned by her descendants as of 2020). They are buried in the Baker family cemetery alongside Sarah's parents and maternal grandparents.

A note on spelling

Samuel Perry's spelling of his surname fluctuates throughout the historical record. His mother Lucinda is listed as "Brazile" on the 1840 census. On the 1860 census he's listed as "Breazeale." On the Civil War Soldiers index, he's under "Braseel" and "Brazil" in the 1866 Alabama census. In his final resting place he and Sarah Murphree are listed as "Brezeal," it appears no more letters could have fit on the headstone but whether this is a cause or an effect of the spelling is unknown. The descendants of his children with Sarah Ann Duncan use the spelling "Brezeale," the descendants of Sarah Murphree use the spelling "Breazeale."
