Based on a newspaper account:
It was a hot, dry, dusty September afternoon in 1912. Mrs. Archie Sherar of Mukilteo, who lived by what is now Mukilteo Boulevard, was outside in her yard when she noticed a towheaded boy of about age five, accompanied only by his bulldog, trudging slowly down the road. The boy was barefoot and it was evident that he had been walking for hours. Mrs. Sherar tried to invite him in, but found the boy spoke not a word of English. She settled him down with a sandwich and a glass of milk, and then phoned Everett Police.
Without a name, the police told her, they could not do much. Mrs. Sherar heard the closing whistle at Crown Lumber and she knew that it meant her husband, Archie, would be out after work delivering scrap wood from the mill to places around town. While she waited she kept her guests comfortable, yet her mind was full of thought. She thought of her own two children and how anxious the child’s mother must be. When Archie came home, they pondered what to do. By then the weary child, and his faithful companion, had fallen asleep.
As the sun was setting they heard piercing and anxious cries coming down the road. A mother in an apron was alternately scanning the dust and lifting her head to cry out. She paused at their gate and the Sherars, the boy, and his dog, came running. The mother and child embraced. For three miles, she said, she had been trailing his footprints. The boy and dog had disappeared yesterday morning. [1]
