Biography

Dudley Bathrick Breed was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was the only known child of Cora Bird (Bathrick) & Edward Dudley Breed ^[1].

His birth date is not certain; the Breed genealogy presents his birth year as 1897. In contrast, an online database exhibits his birth date as 14 May 1902 ^[2]. In this latter reference, however, unfortunately the transcribed surname 'Poreed' does not correspond, and no image of the actual birth record is presented. A birth year of 1902 is calculated from a 1910 census record, at which time a 'Dudley Breed' of age 8 was enumerated in Medford, Massachusetts, with birthplace Minnesota ^[3]. A 1920 census record from Osage, Oklahoma, describes a 'Dudley Breed' born in Minnesota, age 17, enumerated as a "lodger", however it is not certain that such record pertains to this person ^[4]. It should be considered that census records are only as accurate as the enumerated respondents choose to present themselves during an age when such records were scribed by governmental agents who were "guests" in peoples' homes.

Dudley Bathrick Breed married March 21, 1923, at Medford, Massachusetts, Dorothy Madeline Evans [age 25, thus born about 1898, at Haverhill, MA, daughter of John H. & Edna (Houghton) Evans], who at the time of her marriage was a school teacher at Holderness, New Hampshire ^[5].

Adding to the confusion about the birth date and location for Dudley Bathrick Breed, a 1930 census record from Medford, Massachusetts, pertaining to a 'Dudley Breed' ^[6], gives his birth data as 1902 in Massachusetts, thus differing from the premise that he was born in 1897 in Minnesota (per his marriage certificate). It also lists the subject 'Dudley Breed' as 'single', a son of Cora Breed, head of household, thus uncertain as may pertain to this Dudley Bathrick Breed since he had been married seven years earlier. Partial resolution of this conundrum appears in the 1840 census record, where Dudley Breed is listed as 'divorced', in the household of his mother Cora Breed ^[7].

Dudley Bathrick Breed died probably 27 Mar 1982 in Boston, Massachusetts ^[8]. The social security death index record provides a birth date of 14 May 1902 ^[9], thus corresponding with the above cited census records.
