Biography

Joseph Holmes Breed, born 17 May 1813 ^[1] @ Stonington, Connecticut, was the third child of Mary "Polly" (Hancox) Breed (1789-1843) & Charles Breed (1783-1858) ^[2].

He married Catharine [maiden surname uncertain; see notes below]. They settled on a farm in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where census records trace this family consistently in Troy Township ^[3],^[4],^[5]. Among these census records, the surname 'Green' is apparent in context of some children of this family, indicating that perhaps they were legacy of a prior marriage of Catherine:

• Elizabeth Breed, b. about 1847
• Catherine M. Breed, b. about Jan-Feb 1849
• George Breed, b. about 1855

Notes

Catharine, the wife of Joseph Holmes Breed, is very poorly defined. The census records provide evidence that she was born about 1808 in New York State. An online family "searching" service speculates that her maiden surname may have been Pelk, or possibly Peak, and that she was previously married to Oren Green (1807 - 1839), however no probative sourcing is provided ^[6]. In contrast, an online grave memorial site represents that her maiden surname was Reed ^[7], born 11 March 1808 in New York State; died 12 Aug 1893 in Pennsylvania. In the absence of probative source citations, neither is certain.

It is notable that 1880 census shows that Katharine Breed was by that time widowed, hence it becomes likely that Joseph Breed had died earlier than 1895 ^[8]
