Biography

Breed Family Association 5th annual mtg. report March 11, 1926, p. 128, no. 12 [qv]:
He was a husbandman; and lived in Lynn. He married Miss Mary Kertland April 28, 1686; and he died in Lynn Dec. 14, 1728, aged sixty-four. He went to Port Royal. His estate was valued at [pounds] 2,037, 19s, 5d. In his will he gave thirty pounds to the First Church of Christ in Lynn for furnishing the Lord's table; and to his pastor, Rev. Nathaniel Hinchman, fifty pounds and his "colash" (carriage). Captain Breed had brought up the wife of Rev. Mr. Hinchman from a child and treated her as such; and also other children. He also bequeathed a sum of money to the poor widows of the First parish of Lynn, to be distributed by the deacons of the First church, and to his nephew, John Breed, he gave his great bible. Probably no more elaborate funeral ever occurred at Lynn, according to the accounts on file in the probate office; and the allowance of the bills was objected to by the heirs. Mrs. Breed survived him; and was his widow in 1743. [1]

The Essex Genealogist article, The Breed Family, by Marcia Lindberg shows the year of marriage as 1684, however in the Massachusetts Church records it is recorded as 1686. [2] [3]

John and Mary had the following child:

  • Sarah born: 15 Jul 1687, died: 28 Jan 1688

After the death of their only child they went on to become guardians to three girls:

Research Notes

In the History of Stonington, Connecticut (1900) this John Breed who married Mary 'Kirtland' has been erroneously identified in some publications as the son of Allen Breed (Bread). In fact, his father was John Breed [b. about 1635 in Lynn, Massachusetts], brother of Allen Breed [b. 1626 in Pulloxhill, England], the immigrant and progenitor of the Breed family in America. This error was identified & corrected in Breed Family Association #8 (1929), p. 225, para. 6. [4]
