Biography

Rufus Breed, born 3 June 1811, was a son of Mehitable Breed (1783-1865) and Rufus Breed (1784-1865).

Per the Breed family records, Rufus married 2 April 1834. According to his online memorial site, his first wife was Ellen Burcalow, who he married in 1837 [1], and with whom he had 8 children.

The cited online memorial site links his second wife as Martha Ann (nee Miller; 1827 - 1861), who he married in 1851 [2]).

Rufus Breed married third, 24 July 1863 in Winnebago County, Illinois, Ruth Scott [3], who was born about 1819.

Census records chart the Rufus Breed family(ies) in Avon, Rock County, Wisconsin [4], then Durand, Winnebago County, Illinois [5],[6].

The 1850 record describes Rufus as a sawyer, at which time no wife was listed. In the 1870 record he is listed as a grain dealer, and in 1880 as a farmer. The records are confusing on his birth location, as in 1850 it was listed as New Hampshire, whereas in the 1870 record the entry is scrawled, penned-over as New York. In the 1880 record, the birthplace entry is 'NH'. In context, his birth family moved away from Nelson, New Hampshire and lived temporarily in eastern New York for some time, so he could have been born at either place. His online memorial site states that he was born at Nelson, New Hampshire.

Rufus Breed died 10 March 1888 in Winnebago County, Illinois. His grave is in Avon Cemetery, Avon, Rock County, Wisconsin, USA.
