Biography

John Prentice Breed was a son of Mary (Stanton) Breed (1760-1844) & Prentice Breed (1761-1816) [1].

Note: The data inscribed on his grave marker stone [2], indicating that he "DIED 15 Apr 1869, Aged 83", thus calculating to a birth in early 1786 or late 1785, do not coincide with his birth data from the Breed genealogy [3], nor Wheeler [4], both of which state May 21, 1793. Neither do the children listed in the memorial site coincide with the Breed genealogy. Notably, the grave marker stones for both John P. Breed and his wide Lucy Thomas were constructed under direction from their children, as the inscriptions state "Our Father" and "Our Mother", respectively.

Also per his grave marker, his wife was Lucy Thomas [d. 9 May 1865, age 63, per her grave marker [5]. Their children may have included, per the Breed genealogy:

  • 1) Charles Breed
  • 2) Francis Breed
  • 3) Lucy Mary (or May) Breed (1831 - 1894 [6]); m. George J. Carter, was divorced & resumed maiden name, as did her children change to Breed surname at Stonington in 1852. Mary's son
    • 3A) William H. Wells Breed (b. Carter) married Jennie Louise Blake [7], daughter of William & Abigail (Dresser) Blake, b. Jan. 29, 1844, d. Dec. 16, 1932

Their children per their grave memorials were (uncertain):

  • John W. Breed (1832 - 1870)
  • Thomas C Breed (1840–1900)

John Prentice Breed died 15 Apr 1869 at Lee, Massachusetts. His grave is in South Lee Cemetery, Lee, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, USA, along with that of his wife, Lucy Thomas.
