Biography

Soldier Takes His Own Life

"Richard Breeden, 20, of Dresden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Breeden, died at Good Samaritan hospital at 11 o'clock yesterday morning of a self-inflicted bullet would in the head. Dr. S.S. Daw, Muskingum county coroner, returned a verdict of suicide. According to the Sheriff David Welssert's office, the youth was reported as absent without leave from Lockbourne Air Base near Columbus since March 2. The family told deputies the young soldier was despondent over burns about the eyes suffered in a welding accident while in the service and apparently feared that his sight was going bad. Young Breeden was found by his father on the living room floor of his home about 9:10 a.m. Mr. Breeden immediately summoned the Baughman ambulance. The sheriff's office reported a .22 caliber rifle was found beside Breeden. A native of Dresden, he attended Jefferson high school and for a time was employed at Cannon's bakery in Dresden before entering the service Jan. 23, 1952. Surviving in addition to the parents are three sisters, Mrs. Wilma Evans of Frazeysburg Route 3, Mrs. Patricia Workman of Conesville Route 1 and Dolores Breeden of the home, and two brothers, Donald Breeden, stationed with the navy at Norfolk, Va., and Robert Breeden of the home. The body was removed to the Baughman funeral home at Dresden. The body will be taken to the home of an aunt, Mrs. Asa Williams in Dresden, this afternoon. Friends may call. Other arrangements are incomplete."
