Biography

Charles Brennan was born in Kingston, Ontario, likely in 1821/1822. He was a businessman, "C.W. Brennan & Co." Our main information about him is from a court case in which he was the defendant, and he lost. Before payment of the large sum he was adjudged to owe, he provided monetary support to his mother and siblings and then, by 1853, he "skipped." It is likely that he is the Charles. W. Brennan (born Canada, mother born Canada, father born Ireland) who died in Manhattan in 1872 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

Footnote

A Charles W. Brennan married Elinor/Eleanor L. Leveque/ Levesque (born in Canada of French parents); they had daughters Emma E. Brennan (1848-1918) born in Canada and Ada Brennan (born 1858/59) in New York. Online family trees have posited that it was our Charles W. Brennan. I find no proof, and there seems to be a contemporary Charles Brennan, son of Joseph, from Montreal.

Eleanor and her daughters were in New York City in 1870 with no husband listed, and the same in 1880 but with Eleanor listed as a widow. Perhaps this fits with a separation or divorce prior to 1870, and Charles's death in 1872.

In 1880 both daughters were teachers. Eleanor died in Manhattan in 1907. Emma Brennan died in Manhattan in 1918. In 1920 Ada was 61, head of a household in Manhattan.

Eleanor and Emma were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, as were other members of our Ontario Brennan family. The Charles Brennan who died "single" in 1872 was buried in Greenwood Cemetery.
