Biography

Gertrude was probably born September 9, 1901 (see Notes) in New York.[1] Her parents were Harris Breznik and Ida Greenblatt, both Lithuanian immigrants.[2]

By 1910 Gertrude's family had moved to Woodridge, Fallsburg, Sullivan County, New York, United States and consisted of her parents, five siblings, and a hired man named Daniel Brother.[2] In 1915 Gertrude (shown as Gurdie) was still in Woodridge with her parents and siblings.[3] In 1920 Gertrude, her five siblings, and her parents still lived in the same home.[4]

Gertrude and three of her sisters, Anna, Lillian, and Sarah, moved to the Bronx, Bronx, New York, United States, where they were living together in 1925. Anna worked as a saleslady, Lillian was a nurse, Gertrude did housework, and Sarah was a bookkeeper.[5]

Gertrude married Irving Saffeir January 5, 1930 in the Bronx, Bronx, New York, United States[6] and they had two children (see Notes).

Gertrude and Irving lived in Queens, New York, United States until sometime after 1935 (when their son, Alan was born in New York), before moving to California, United States.[7]

In 1940 Gertrude, Irving, and their two children were living in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, United States in the home of Gertrude's sister, Anna Weiner, and her husband, Joseph Weiner.[7]

Gertrude lived in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, California, United States from at least 1990 until the time of her death.[8]

Gertrude died February 8, 1996 in Los Angeles, California, United States[9] and was buried in the Garden of Shemot section of Mount Sinai Memorial Park in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, United States, beneath a stone shared with Irving. The inscription under Gertrude's name is: Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, & Great Grandmother.[10]

Notes

Birth Date
Gertrude's birth date is shown differently in different records:

  • September 9, 1900, in her death record[9]
  • September 9, 1901, in her Social Security Death Index record[1] (Gertrudes's Social Security record is the earliest one with precise date and also the only one with information she provided, therefore believed most likely to be correct)
  • about 1901 in the 1910 census[2] and 1920 census[4]
  • September 9, 1902, in a residence record[8]
  • about 1902 in the 1915 census[3] and 1925 census[5]
  • about 1905 in the 1940 census[7]

Children
Gertrude's children were:

  • Gloria Saffeir, born about 1932 in New York
  • Alan Saffeir, born about 1935 in New York

Bresnick Spellings
The original family in Lithuania was probably named Breznik, but the spelling was changed to Bresnick for those who immigrated to the United States. Many alternate spellings and misspellings have been seen in records, including:

  • Bresnuik in 1910 census[2]
  • Bresinck in 1920 census[4]
