Matthew, who sometimes went by Joseph, was born in 1847. He is the son of James Brett and Sarah McCaine. [1]
He served in Company 'K' of the 9th Mississippi Infantry Regiment during the Civil War; [2] and married on 14 Nov 1876 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi to Sarah H. "Sallie" Casteel. [3] Matthew and Sarah had at least one child:

Matthew passed away in 1879 and is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Meridian, Mississippi. [4]
