Biography

This is the profile for Mary Brewer, daughter of Thomas Brewer of Roxbury, who married William Lane in Boston on August 21, 1656.

Date and Place of Birth

May's date and place of birth are uncertain. There is a record of the baptism of a Mary Brewer, daughter of Thomas Brewer, on February 8, 1623/4 at St. Alphage in Greenwich, Kent, England[1] It is highly unlikely, however, that that baptismal record relates to this profile's Mary Brewer because (1) it would mean she was 34 at the time of her first marriage, (2) it would mean that she had her last child when she was 44, (3) there are no St Alphage records for her probable siblings John and Sarah and (4) there is no evidence connecting this profile's Mary Brewer or her father, Thomas Brewer of Roxbury, to the St Alphage area. Based on the date of Mary's marriage (1656), Mary was probably born sometime in 1631-1636, with 1634 being a reasonable midpoint estimate. Since, as discussed in her father's profile, he probably immigrated about 1638, Mary was probably born somewhere in England.

Marriage and Children

Mary married William Lane in Boston on the 21st day of the 6th month in 1656 (August 21, 1656 in the "new" calendar).[2][3] As discussed in William's profile, she was his second wife.

Mary and William had the following children, all born in Boston:

  1. Sara, b. June 15, 1657,[4][5]
  2. William, b. October 1, 1659,[6][5] m. June 21, 1680 Sarah Webster,[5] removed to Hampton, New Hampshire in 1686,[5] d. February 14, 1749[5]
  3. Elizabeth, b. February 3, 1661/2[7][5]
  4. Thomas, b. March 8, 1663/4[8]
  5. Ebenezer, b. March 27, 1666[9][5]

Death

Mary's date and place of death are uncertain. No record has been found of her after the birth of her last known child in March 1666.

It is highly unlikely that the 1623 St Alphage baptismal record relates to this profile's Mary Brewer because (1) it would mean she was 34 at the time of her first marriage, (2) it would mean that she had her last child when she was 44, (3) there are no St Alphage records for her probable siblings John and Sarah and (4) there is no evidence connecting her or her father to the St Alphage area.
