There appears to be three different handwritings in the Bible, and it is believed these belonged to Eliza (Briggs) Brewer, one of Jane (Hibbs) Brewer's daughters, and Gladys (Brewer) Cook. However, it is also possible that the Bible is newer, and that it was begun by Bryant Brewer, Jr., in which case, the handwriting is probably his (Jane could not write), Lauretta (Ingraham) Brewer, and Gladys (Brewer) Cook. All of this is conjecture...that some entries were made by Gladys (Brewer) Cook is all we know for sure, and this is on the testimony of her daughter, Barbara (Cook) Jones. It also seems strange that there are no entries for the deaths of Bryant Brewer, Sr., and Eliza (Briggs) Brewer. Brewer, Jr. Phillips, Bessie, written 14 Apr 1979 Note: This is information Bessie Phillips had found at the courthouse, and some information is her own personal knowledge, or the personal knowledge of her uncle, Russell Brewer [my great-uncle]. In the letter, the source of the data is identified. Pages 1-2 Page 1: Bryant Brewer, father [of] John Willard, bought his farm in the Prairie Hill neighborhood in 1880. J.W. and his family lived with parents, Bryant and Jane, until they bought their own farm, I suppose. I know that Harry and Guy [Harry was my grandfather, and Guy was Bessie's father, and Harry's brother] were both born on their grandparents farm but I don't know about their sister Gladys's birthplace. Grandfather Bryant suffered a broken leg in 1905, so J.W. and family moved in with Bryant for a year, about. Uncle Russell was six years old and started school that fall at Prairie Hill. Bryant's and J.W.'s farms were anly [sic] 3 or 4 miles Page 2: apart. There might be something in this obituary that you don't know, so I shall include it. From the Americus Greeting, October 17l 1912. `Bryant Brewer was born in Covington, Indiana, February 10th, 1831 and departed this life at his home in Americus, October 11,1912, and was 81 years, 8 months and one day old at the time of his death. He was married Oct. 13, 1850 to Miss Jane Hibbs. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Iowa, afterwards moving back to their home in Indiana. They came to Kansas in 1878, moving to a farm three miles west of Emporia on Moon Creek where they lived one or two years. They then purchased a farm southwest of town, and resided there twenty years or more. When overtaken by feeble health and declining years they moved to this city two years ago last March. `There were born four sons: William Sanders, Phillip Oliver, John Willard, and Homer Franklin. Only one of the children is now living, Phillip Oliver, who resides in Indiana. The funeral services were held at the family residence in this city the 13th day of October, 1912. A sad coincident [sic] is the fact that this would have been the date of their 62nd wedding anniversary. `The cause of his death was heart trouble, he being able to be down town only a few days before his death, and able to sit up and talk not more than an hour before his death. He had a host of friends amomg [sic] the old settlers who will join the members of his family in their sorrow and extend their heartfelt sympathy.'"

Printed For Private Distribution, Terre Haute, Indiana:c.1936 Note: This is a book published sometime after July 1936 [the latest date in the book]. It appears to be well researched, and states clearly what is proven by sources, and what is surmised from evidence. The connection between our Briant Brewer and his supposed parents, Thomas and Lucretia Brewer is "surmised." I have a copy of the book in my library. It does contain census records and land records gleamed from the various original sources. In some cases, no source is given forthe information. Page 3 Note: No sources are given for this information. "Bryant Brewer and Jane Hibbs were married by JAMES Townsley, a Pastor of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, so records of the Townsley family, or the Baptist Church, might have information concerning the family which could be of assistance. "Bryant and Jane Brewer, when they moved to Kansas, took up a farm in a Quaker neighborhood, and were members of the Quaker Church there, until the church was moved several miles south. They then joined the Christian Church in Americus. It is possible that the Quaker Church near Covington might have some record concerning the family?"
