Biography

Elizabeth "Gillia" Brewer was born in Washington County, Alabama about 1794. She is the daughter of George Brewer and Nancy Bird. She married Burrell Brewer about 1819, by whom she had one son:

  1. George M. Brewer, born St. Stephens, Washington Co., AL on 5 Aug 1820; died 10 Jul 1882, Mobile, Mobile Co., AL.

Her father's will, written 15 Oct 1821, leaves "to my beloved daughter Elizabeth Gilly Brewer one negor girl named Caroline with her increase to her and her heirs forever, five hundred dollars to be paid her by my son Micajah to be paid in Dec 1823 appropriated for that purpose."[1]

There is a deed of Indenture made 25 Dec 1840 between Gillia Elizabeth Brewer, widow of Burrell Brewer, and George M. Brewer, her son, parties of the 1st part, and Dudley Richardson Walker of the 2nd part, for $2000 paid by Walker, for part of sections 1 and 2, T8, R14 at the southern corner of land formerly claimed by Thomas Shields; in addition, the sale included a flat boat, blacksmith tools, farming tools such as plows & hoes. Signed by all three parties; witnessed by adeline Mead and Susan Russ. Accepted as re-record by Folsom on 1 Apr 1854.[2]

Gillia died some time between the above Indenture and Dec 1850, when George F. Salle and Julia B. Salle filed letters of administration for the estate of George Brewer inwhich they state that she was deceased.
