Biography

George Brewer, Jr. was born abt. 1715 in Surry County, Virginia Colony. He was the son of George Brewer and Sarah Lanier.

On 4 Mar 1734/35, George married Abigail Wyche.[1] Abigail was born abt. 1718, probably in Brunswick County, the daughter of Henry and Frances Wyche. She was identified in her father's 1741 will as "my daughter Abigail Brewer."[2][3]

Children of George Brewer and Abigail Wyche:

  1. James Brewer, b. abt. 1736, Brunswick, VA; d. bef. 16 Aug 1760. On 22 Jul 1757, George conveyed to "James Brewer, son of the said George Brewer," 270 acres on the south side of Falling Run.
  2. John Brewer, b. abt. 1737; died 1826.[4] He married Lucy. No children named in will - after bequest to Lucy and other expenses balance. of estate to nephews Yerby Brewer, Willie Brewer, William Brewer and Lewis Brewer. [Brewer Researcher, Chris Chester, writes on his blog that James married Bethia Morris and removed to Hancock County, Georiga, leaving descendants. See Brouwer Genealogy.]
  3. William Brewer, b. abt. 1738; d. 1793; possibly m. Susannah Cato and removed to South Carolina [Needs further research].
  4. Sarah Brewer, b. abt. 1740.; m. bef. 16 Aug 1760, ___ Vincent. She is named as Sarah Vincent in her father's will.
  5. Frances Brewer, b. abt. 1742. Frances is mentioned in the 1747 will of her grandmother, Frances Wyche.[5]
  6. George Brewer, b. abt. 1744, Brunswick, VA; d. 14 Jun 1802. [See Brouwer Genealogy for alternative death of George Brewer]
  7. Elizabeth Brewer, b. abt. 1746.
  8. Henry Brewer, b. abt. 1750. Brother John was guardian to Henry, Abigail & Rebecca Brewer.[6]

In his father's will of 13 July 1741, George was bequeathed a young horse. The will was recorded in Brunswick County, Virginia on 2 Aug 1744 (Surry county became Brunswick County in 1720). He helped to execute an inventory of the estate of the deceased Thomas Mitchell on 3 September 1747, and he served as an Executor of his mother-in-law’s will that was recorded on 5 May 1748. He also participated in the inventory of his mother-in-law’s estate on 26 September 1749.

On Oct 1748 and Apr 1749, residents of Brunswick County, Virginia voted for representatives of the House of Burgesses. Names included on this poll list were George and William Brewer, and George, William, and Peter Wyche, among others.[8]

This Indenture written 22 July 1757 ... George Brewer of the County of Brunswick out of natural love and affection which he beareth unto James Brewer, his son, of the county aforesaid but more especially for and in consideration of 5 shillings current money of VA conveys to the said James Brewer, his heirs and assigns, forever, all that certain tract of land and premises situate lying and being in the said county of Brunswick on the south side of the Falling Run containing by estim. 270 acres, be the same more or less, which said tract of land was formerly granted to John Linch and by the said John Linch conveyed to the said George Brewer by Deed, 21 Feb. 1743, which said Deed was admitted to record of the aforesaid Brunswick County, reference hereunto may be had ... Signed, Sealed and Del.

In Sep 1758, George was listed as part of the Brunswick County Militia.[10]

-----In the name of God Amen, I, George Brewer of Brunswick County and parish of __________ being very sick but of sound judgment and menory do make & ordain this my Lat Will and Testament in manner following that is to say.
-----Imprimis. I give and bequeath unto my son John Brewer my tract of land situate on the North side of the Beaver Pond Creek containing two hundred & twenty acres, also two hundred and forty five acres the lower part of another tract on the said Creek containing four hundred and ninety five (five is scratched out) acres beginning at the mouth of the Ready branch and thence to the back line to include the aforesaid quantities to him and his heirs forever likewise I give unto my said son John my negroe girl Patt and five sheep to him and his heirs forever.
-----I give and bequeath unto my son George Brewer two hundred and forty five acres of land on the Beaver Pond Creek the other part of my tract containing four hundred and ninety beginning at the mouth of Ready Branch then to the back line to include also my negroe boy Will, one cow and calf and five sheep to him and his heirs forever.
-----Item. I give and bequeath unto my son William Brewere all that part of the tract of land I now live on , on the north side of the falling run granted me by patent bearing date the eighth day of September one thousand seven hundred and twenty eight: also one hundred and fifty acres adjoining the lower part of said tract of land beginning at the mouth of small branch on the north side of the Falling Run at the upper and of the great meadow and then to my back line to include the aforesade auantity. Also my negroe man Peter, my orse Ball, and one young mare and one feather bed and furniture to him and his heirs forever.
-----Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Henry Brewer all the part of the tract of land whereon I live which lies on the south side of the Falling Run, also one hundred and thirty acres of land the lower part of a tract adjoining the land I live on also my negroe boy Jacob, and one feather bed and furniture to him and his heirs forever.
-----Item. I give unto my daughter Sarah Vincent one negroe girl named Lucy, one cow and calf and two sheep to her and her heirs forever.
-----Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Frances Wyche my negroe girl Nan, three cows and calves, and six pewter plates to her and her heirs forever.
-----Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Brewer my negroe wench Hannah to her and her heirs forever.
-----Item. I give unto my daughter Abigail Brewer my negroe wench Milley to her and her heirs forever.
-----My will is that my still with all the residue fo my estate not hereunto given away be sold and the money arising there from be equally divided amongst my four youngest children William, Henry, Elizabeth, and Abigail and if those of my last mentioned children should die before the arrive to the age of twenty one or married then my will is taht their pat be equally divided amongst my surviving children their age not to be regarded.
-----I do constitute and oppoint my son John Brewer and George Brewer executors of this my last will & testament, revoking disannuling and making void all other wills heretofore by me made. In witness whereof Ihave hereunto set my hand and seal this sixteenth day of August, one thousand seven hundred and sixty.

At a count held for Brunswick County the 27th day of October 1760 this will was proved by the oaths of John Rosser, and Daniel Cator two of the witnesses thereto and on the motion of John Brewer the executor therein named who made oath thereto according to law and together with George Wych & William Brewer his securities entered into and acknowledged their bond inthe penalty of one thousand pounds conditioned as the law directs certificate was granted for obtaning a probate thereof in one form and at a court held for the said county the 26th day of January 1761 the said will was further proved by the oath of James Wall the otehr witness thereto and ordered to be recorded.

As George did not mention nor provide for his wife in his will, we can assume that she predeceased him.

  • George Brewer, II did not mention James Brewer in his will probably because he gave him land in 1757 described here. However, the relationship is proven in the land gift. That may be the year he came of age or married or he could have died prior. It was three years before George II's death.
