Son of Andrew Peery “Andy” Brewster (1808-1883) and Mary "Polly" Pruitts (1808-1892).

James Squire Brewster married first Frances S. Shrader (1840-after Sep 1887) on 25 Feb 1858 in Jeffersonville District, Tazewell Co, VA. They had eleven children: Adelia (1858-?); Molly (1859-1944); Charles G. "Charlie" (1861-?); James Thomas (1862-1928); Thomas H. (1864-?); Polly (1865-?); William Daniel (1869-1947); George Crockett (1872-1941); Lettie D. (1875-1959); Albert (1881-?); Ada "Adie" (1887-?). NB: Thomas H. and Polly may be "ghosts".

James Squire Brewster married second Mary C. Lockhart (1867-1928) in 1887 in Tazewell Co, VA. They had eight children: Sarah Ada (1888-1955); Ida B. (1889-1975); Belle (1891-1913); Lena Causby (1893-1941); Myrtle Edward (son ; 1896-1959); John Henry (1899-1952); Robert Arthur (1901-1974); Dortha E. (1906-?).

James Squire Brewster was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted on 5 Oc5 1862 for three years as a corporal in Capt. Robert H. Taylor's company, Caldwell's Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, later Co. F, 16th Virginia Cavalry (CSA). He was listed on muster rolls as Absent, wounded, on 8 Sep 1864 and 31 Dec 1864. His brother Benjamin enlisted in the same unit at the same time as James.

Co. F, 16th Virginia Cavalry (CSA) was organized on 5 Oct 1862 and was made up primarily of men from Tazewell Co, VA. From Oct 1863 to Mar 1864, the regiment was quartered at Camp Georgia in Tazewell Co, VA. From Mar to Oct 1864 they were headquartered near Luray, VA. In Nov-Dec 1864, they were headquartered at Stanardsville, VA. The 16th VA Cavalry saw action during the Gettysburg campaign in 1863 when they burned Carlisle Barracks, PA, and penetrated almost to the Susquehanna River at Harrisburg, PA, then fought Custer's Union cavalry on the third day at Gettysburg then covered the Confederate withdrawal. In 1864, they participated in Maj. Gen. Jubal T. Early's campaign against Washington, D.C. They helped to burn Chambersburg, PA, and were engaged in the Battle of the Monocacy in MD.

James had two wives. His first wife was Fannie Shrader, They had six children Don, Allen, Tom, Crockett, Mollie, and Delia. The second family there was eight Children Robert A, Adi, Ida, Lennie, Ed, Dorthy, Belle, John.
