Biography

Ruth Brewster, daughter of Jonathan Brewster and Lucretia (Oldham) Brewster, was born in Jones River, Plymouth Colony, 3 Oct 1631.^[1][2] Jones River is now Duxbury, Massachusetts. She passed away in 1677.

Ruth married first John Pickett in New London, 14 Mar 1651.^[1] His ancestry is unknown.^[2]

John, 14 Feb 1661/2, relinquished his rights to property deeded to him by his father-in-law and provided that his "mother-in-law, Mrs. Brewster, the late wife of his father Mr. Jonathan Brewster shall have a full and competent means out of the estate during her life, from the said Benjamin Brewster at her own dispose freely and fully to command at her own pleasure."^[2][3]

He died at sea, returning from Barbadoes 16 Aug 1667.^[2][4] John died intestate. The inventory was appraised at £1140.^[2][5] Distribution was made to the relict Mrs. Ruth Hill, John Pickett (double portion), Mary, Ruth, Adam, Mercy, William. Sons were not yet 21 and the daughters were not yet 18.^[6]

Ruth (Brewster) Pickett, widow of John Pickett, married second Charles Hill of London, 2 July 1668, in New London,^[7][1][4] or the 16th^[8] He was the son of George Hill of Barley, Derbyshire, England. He married second Rachel Mason by whom he had a stillborn child 4 Apr 1679, and Rachel died in childbirth.^[9] He died Oct 1684 in New London. Some of his estate was not distributed until 11 Jan 1709/10 and mentioned sons Charles Hill and Jonathan Hill and daughter Jane Hill.^[2][10][11]

Ruth Hill, "a woman of great worth, died comfortably and christianly" in New London, Connecticut, 30 April 1677. She died of complications of childbirth a few days after the birth of her unnamed son.^{[8][1][2][12]}
