My working theory is that she was the first wife of Justus White and mother of his children, including Sarah Ann White with whom Tryphena (Preston) Brewster is enumerated in 1865 and 1870.

We know that Justus was married to a Cynthia Brewster (1789-1829) by whom he had four children, including Sarah Ann. Justus then married Eunice Strong who survived him and lived with Sarah Ann and Tyrphena, who would have been Sintha's sister-in-law and aunt of Sarah Ann.

Unfortunately, I have yet to find records for Cynthia Brewster White other than references to her in her children's records.

OK, I gotta ask what was the Jedi mind trick you used to jump over the married surname barrier and get to Justus White? I did a RootSearch when I posted this and everything was pretty much a dead end on .

Anyway after looking at your post I went back to the South Hadley Vital Records to see if there was anything in the VRs on Justus White and voila, there it is. A marriage record between Justus White and Miss Cynthia Brewster 4 Jan 1821, just four entries up from the marriage of Asahel and Miss Tryphena Preston . https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/2495/images/40143_273044__0008-00188

Jillaine: I think your theory is a very good theory and the profiles are ready to be linked by marriage.

How I did it was to start to look into who Sarah and Eunice were-- the two White woman with whom Tryphena was living in 1865-1870. Went back to the 1860 census and looked for Eunice White; found her living with both Justus White (presumably her husband) and also in same household was Sarah Ann White, supposed daughter. This then led me to look for more files for Justus. (I made a profile for him to contain it all.) That led me to him and Cynthia Brewster as parents of the children in the 1850 and 1860 census, and finding the second marriage to Eunice, maiden name Strong...

I've "married" Sintha and Justus

I love looking at details for the hints at life stories... ok... Sarah Ann White, daughter of Justus and Cynthia (Brewster) White, step-daughter of Eunice who becomes Sarah's step-mother when Sarah is five...

When Eunice is widowed in 1862, Sarah, still single, lives with her per 1865 and 1870 censuses. Sarah's widowed aunt Tryphena (Preston) Brewster is also living with them. The widows are very elderly in 1870. In 1862 when Justus made his will, he bequeathed to Sarah Ann an extra $500 "to be in full for services rendered in my family by her." I.e., taking care of her elderly parents, for one. (They were elderly by 1860...). We know that Aunt Tryphena died in May 1874. I believe Step-mom Eunice died in 1872 because there was a bunch of activity in Justus' probate file at that time. Justus wanted what was left of his estate after Eunice's death to be equally distributed to his children.

So... let's say Eunice dies in 1872; Sarah Ann continues to care for elderly aunt Tryphena for two more years. Tryphena dies in May 1874. The following month (!), at the age of 50, good, care-taking daughter/niece Sarah Ann White marries Moses Sawyer! I haven't been able yet to find them in 1880 or 1900 censuses, but we know that Sarah Ann White Sawyer died in Florida (!) in 1907!!

So she had an additional 33.5 years of life with a husband after having taken care of others for the first 50 years of her life... I hope she was happy...

Edited to add: AND was father Justus aware that his daughter was sacrificing love to take care of them? Was she in love with Moses all that time? Have I told you I grew up reading historical novels? Grin.

I think I found Moses and Sarah in 1900... more wonderful color to add to the story. They're living in Oklahoma territory ! And get this: Sarah is recorded as having had six births, three of which are living! Huh?! All other data matches Sarah and Moses who married in 1874 but the children bit throws me! Who were those children ?!

Jillaine: This is awesome, when the cold hard facts can come together to tell a story. The story clearly reveals the upright character of Sarah Ann White, providing care for her aged step-mother and aunt while she put her own life on hold; this is the essence of integrity, doing what you know you ought to even it costs you.

It is also interesting to note that Justus recognized that his departure would leave Eunice in a vulnerable position and that he had anticipated her need and formulated a long-term care plan for his wife. It is clearly no accident that he chose Sarah to be one to care for Eunice in her old age; there is no doubt that he saw the virtue of lovingkindness, compassion, and self-sacrifice in the nature of his daughter. It is also likely that 40 years earlier Eunice had provided the same to a broken-hearted five year old Sarah after she had lost her mother.

And remember Broughton Alvord admin on Asahel's estate? He shows up late in the lengthy estate papers of Justice White as well! He would have been Justus's nephew-in-law...

I am totally fixated on this family grouping... I think I will work on Eunice this morning. She was Strong at her marriage to Justus, but that might have been a married name since it was a second marriage at least for Justus.

Eunice Strong. This would not be the first intersection with the Strong family. My wife's ancestor is Tabitha (Brewster) Strong (1732-1800). She was a sister to Jesse Brewster hence the aunt of Asahel, Mary, and Cynthia.

I have yet to find what Strong family Eunice fits into, but I've got to think given the bonds between all these families, that she's probably related to the Strong family that Tabitha married into... somewhere...
