Biography

Edward Bricknell was born in the Colony of Tasmania (1856-1900)

Edward Bricknell

Birth: [1]
Date: 17 MAY 1856
Place: Longford Tas. Aust.

Edward Bricknell (Bachelor, Farmer, age 20) married Cecilia Annie Cain (Spinster, Daughter of Farmer, aged 18) on 15 Aug 1877 at the residence of Rev William Law, Canning St, Launceston. Witnesses were John Keys and Christina Johnstone. [2]

Edward petitioned/filed for divorce from Cecilia on 16 June 1886 (File No 108) [3]

His divorce application was reported in Launceston Examiner (Tas. : 1842 - 1899) Sat 10 Jul 1886 Page 3 MATRIMONIAL JURISDICTION. [4]

MATRIMONIAL JURISDICTION
APPLICATION FOR DIVORCE - BRICKNELL V. BRICKNELL.-In this issue the petitioner sought for a dissolution of his marriage with the respondent Annie Cecilia Bricknell, on the ground of adultery.
Mr. Alfred Dobson appeared for the petitioner, Edward Bricknell and made an application to be allowed to dispense with a co-respondent and for directions as to the mode of the trial. Dr Dobson explained the circumstances, which went to show that the parties were married in 1878 at Launceston, by the Rev. W. Law They afterwards lived at S, Leonards, but the respondent subsequently left her home and had since been living at Launceston in houses of ill-fame, She had given birth to child of which the petitioner was not the father. No appearance had been entered by tho respondent, and no answer had been filed. The application for dispensing with the co-respondent was made on the ground that as the respondent had been leading an irregular life, it was impossible to fix upon one co-respondent in particular.
Mr. Justice Giblin said that in this case the Court was prepared to make an order dispensing with a corespondent, and he would, therefore, grant the application, and the evidence would be taken orally on Friday, the 23rd.

After Edward divorced Cecilia (in 1886) he married Mary Ann Milner on 24 Dec 1895, at Mr. Andersons' residence Elphin Road, Launceston. [5]

Edward died in 1936, aged 77.

Research Notes

Adriane Millner Note: not 1858 as entry,

his Uncle Charles Bricknell left him "my gold watch and chain to my Nephew Edward Bricknell son of my brother James"
Sue had already identified "a male "Bricknell" born 17 May 1857 as child of Edward & Mary in Longford - no 1372
The father is shown as a Labourer: the mother has no Maiden Name given: space for informant is left blank.
The Original Record also had no name given to male child born. (1876 His uncle Charles, see above note.)
This is how Sue identified Edward before seeing Bible Pages I sent her.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Edward by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Edward:

It was Charles Bricknell who is the uncle who left him a gold watch in his will.
