Biography

Sarah Bridges was born at "Fort Brooks" in a wooden blockhouse in Tampa Florida. She was there at the time of the Second Seminole War (1835-1842) in which her father and brothers were all soldiers.

Sarah related to Charles Ferdinand Herriman that her family survived many narrow escapes with the Indians as well as an account of the Massacre of Fort Davis Garrison. They were under siege by the Indians and had no water, many of the men had been shot trying to get to the spring outside the Fort.

Sarah escaped from the Fort before the Massacre took place guarded by United States Officers.

Sarah made the acquaintance of Captain Hezekiah Herriman in Florida where he would serve as a sergeant in the Mexican War (1846-1848).

The family lived in Stockton Springs Maine on the family homestead called "The Mill". Sarah is remembered as a most congenial woman, good wife and mother and was held in very high respect by her family, neighbors and friends both young and old.

Both Hezekiah and Sarah died at home.

There is a copy of Sarah's obituary on her FindAGrave profile published in the Republican Journal Belfast Maine June 14, 1906. The obituary lists Sarah and Hezekiah as being married in Florida April 2, 1845. I suspect that the year may have actually been 1844 as their first child, a daughter, was born in March of 1845 in Arkansas.

The obituary also states that three sons were born in Arkansas, Harry W. in 1848, Albert F. in 1850 and Charles F. in 1853. In 1855 the family removed to Maine where another daughter was born in 1858, Margaret A. and a son in 1870, Hezekiah.
