Biography

James Bridgham was born in Boston on January 12, 1679, the third of six children.

It appears that James was a seaman, and probably a Captain. The newspaper, “The Boston News-Letter” recorded a number of arrivals and departures of ships associated with James Bridgham: (May 1, 1704) “out-ward bound, James Bridgham for Barbados, in the Sloop Unity,” (October 2, 1704) “From Barbadoes we are acquainted, that Noyce, Andrews, Bridgham, Barns were taken by the French,” (March 5, 1705) “from Nantasket Road for Barbadoes, 7 merchant ships, viz Capts. …, Bridgham, …,” (November 19, 1705) “outward from Barbadoes, … James Bridgham Ship Hampton, …,” (December 3 to December 10, 1705) “outwards for Barbadoes … Bridgham in the Hampton,” (July 1, 1706) “inwards, from Baradoes, James Bridgham Ship Hampton, …”

He married Mercy Stoddard on August 20, 1705. She was born before 1690 and died after 1706.

It is likely that James Bridgham died around 1707 or shortly after. First, there are no other records of him beyond that date. Second, he had no more children after 1707. Third, Rev. Joseph Baxter of Medfield “was married to Mrs. Mercy Bridgham on Feb. 21, 1715/16.” Sibley’s Harvard Graduates states that this was “Mercy (Stoddard) Bridgham.” So James’s wife remarried in 1715/16.
