Biography

Ellsworth Bridgham was born on March 2, 1820 in Marion, Massachusetts, the first of ten children.

Ellsworth Bridgham married his first wife, Delia A. Willey in Cherryfield, Maine on October 12, 1846. She was born December 25, 1823, in Cherryfield, the daughter of Charles and Hannah (Guptill) Willey.

In 1850, Ellsworth Bridgham was a farmer and owned real estate worth $700 in Township 14, Maine. His household included himself, his wife Delia, and their children George, and Hannah. Also living with him was a laborer, 15-year-old Jarvis Gooch. He lived next to his parents, Alden and Margaret, his uncle, Alvan, and his cousin, Horatio. He ran a farm of 25 improved acres and 25 unimproved acres. The farm had a cash value of $700, and the implements and machinery were worth $20. He had 1 horse, 1 milch [sic] cow, and 3 sheep, all valued at $100. His farm produced 5 bushels of Indian corn, 7 bushels of oats, 8 pounds of wool, 1 bushels of peas and beans, 15 bushels of Irish potatoes, and 8 bushels of barley. The value of his market garden produce was $5. He also produced 100 pounds of butter, and 10 tons of hay. The value of his home-made manufactures was $8. The value of his slaughtered animals was $3.

Delia (Willey) Bridgham died in Cherryfield on February 8, 1857 at the age of 33, leaving four small children.

Within two years, Ellsworth Bridgham married his second wife, Mary J. Phipps, who was born February 21, 1833, in Maine, likely the daughter of William Henry and Eliza (Howe) Phipps.

In 1860, Ellsworth and Mary lived at Plantation 14 (Dennysville PO) He owned real estate worth $800 and a personal estate worth $400. His household included their children George, Heaviton [sic], Charles, Ella, and Clarrence [sic]. All the children except Clarence attended school. He ran a farm of 6 improved acres and 44 unimproved acres. The farm had a cash value of $700, and the implements and machinery were worth $25. He had 2 horses, 3 milch [sic] cows, 1 other cattle, 2 sheep, and 1 swine, all valued at $197. His farm produced 16 bushels of wheat, 50 bushels of oats, and 6 pounds of wool. Alvin and his brother Horatio, and their first cousin Ellsworth worked farms very close together, if not next to each other. Their names were together in the 1860 agriculture census.

In June of 1863, Ellsworth Bridgeham [sic] of “No. 14,” Maine, registered for the Civil War draft. He was a farmer.

In 1870, Ellsworth Bridgham of Township 14 was a farmer with real estate worth $1,000 and a personal estate worth $1,000. Included in his household were his wife Mary, and his children George, Hannah, Charles, Ella, Clarence, and Delia. George and Charles worked on the farm. The three youngest children attended school. Also living in this household was a 22-year-old farm worker, Chas. H. Dudley. He ran a farm of 30 improved acres, and 40 wood-land acres. The farm had a cash value of $1000, and the implements and machinery were worth $100. The farm paid $350 in wages. He had 2 horses, 3 milch [sic] cows, 3 other cattle, 10 sheep, and 1 swine, all valued at $400. His farm produced 30 bushels of oats, and 25 bushels of buckwheat.

Ellsworth was struck by misfortune in 1871.

The Machias Union learns that the house, barn and out-buildings owned and occupied by Mr. Ellsworth Bridgham at Plantation No 14, were entirely destroyed by fire, early Saturday morning last. Nothing was saved from the house; some of the farm stock was saved. Cause unknown. Loss not less than $2,000.[1]

In 1880, Ellsworth Bridgham of Whitneyville, Maine was a carpenter. Living in his household were his wife, Mary, and children Clarence, and Delia. Both children attended school. Page 8 of the census points the reader to page 11, where two more household members are listed: “clergyman’s widow” Ella E. Bridgham and her 3-year-old daughter, F. Leonora. Ella was the widow of Joshua L. Bridgham, who died in November the previous year. Joshua was Ellsworth’s first cousin. F. Leonora also goes by Frances L. in later years.

Sometime between 1880 and 1885, he and his family moved from Maine to Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In 1885 and 1886, he worked as a carpenter while living with his brother Clarence at 1113 E. 22d St. in Minneapolis. In April of 1888, he sold property in Minneapolis for $3,000. In October the next year, he sold property to his sister, Sarah B. Willey for $1,000.

Ellsworth Bridgham died on May 15, 1890, at the age of 70 and is buried in Mound Cemetery, Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.

Mary (Phipps) Bridgham is buried at the Mound Cemetery in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.
