Biography

Isabella Bridgham was born on October 29, 1850, in Poland, Maine.

She married her first husband, Louis Drake Brinckerhoff on September 25, 1866, just one month before her 16th birthday. He was born October 18, 1844, in Brooklyn, New York to George Woolsey and Sarah (Austin) Brinckerhoff.

In 1870, Lewis and Isabella Brinckerhoff lived in Fauquier, Virginia with their children, Sarah E. and Isabella. He owned his farm, valued at $12,000. They had three live-in domestic servants.

Louis Brinckerhoff died on January 21, 1877, in Fredericksburg, Virginia at the age of 32.

Isabella married her second husband, Charles Warren Richardson on December 2, 1879, in Manhattan, New York. He was born September 14, 1842, in Maine, the son of Charles and Mary H. (Warren) Richardson. He had been previously married to Maria L. Drinkwater on September 14, 1864. Maria had died on September 6, 1873.

In 1880, C. W. and Bell lived in Newton, Massachusetts where he was in the lumber business. Living with Charles and Bell Richardson were a nephew, B. Brinckerhoff, and a daughter, Grace Richardson, apparently from a previous marriage.

A widowed Isabel Richardson lived with her daughter, Eva Webb and son-in-law Richard Webb in Portland in 1910. Actually, Isabel’s husband didn’t die until July 14, 1914.

In 1920 and 1930, Isabelle lived with her widowed daughter, Eva Webb in Portland.

Isabella B. Richardson died on March 18, 1938, in Hendersonville. Bright’s Disease was a contributing factor to her death. Her body was transferred to Portland, Maine on March 19, 1938.

Research Notes

According to the "Early Vital Records of Poland, Maine," ("New England Historical and Genealogical Register," 1934, Vol. 88, p, 247), Isabel Bridgham, "offspring of George Bridgham, Jr., and wife" "was born Aug. 1, 1849, and died Sept. 26, 1849." This means that she did not marry Louis D. Brinckerhoff and Charles W. Richardson. Then who did? One possibility is Isabelle Bridgham, daughter of Clark Bridgham, b. abt 1851 in New York. Another possibility is that George and Mertilla had another daughter about 1851 and name her Isabelle also.

Isabel is not listed in the 1850 Maine census as a member of the George and Myrtilla household.

From the "Daily Eastern Argus," (Portland, ME), Sep 28, 1866, p. 3,

Married.
...
In Boston, 25th inst., Mr. Louis D. Brinckerhoff, of Brooklyn, N. Y., and Miss Isabella, daughter of George Bridgham, Jr., of Bridgton.

Living with Charles and Bell Richardson in the 1880 census was a nephew, B. Brinckerhoff.

Could not find her in the 1900 census.

She is listed as a widow in the 1910 census.

The 1938 Portland, Maine, city directory lists retired Charles W. and Isabelle C. Richardson on 596 S. Main St. Is this the same couple?

Brights Disease was a contributing factor in her death. Her body was transferred from North Carolina to Portland, Maine on March 19, 1938.
