He was part of the guard of honour at the signing of the surrender document by Japanese General Adachi at Cape Wom near Wewak on 11 Sep 1945. He returned to Australia aboard the liberty ship 'Seabarb' in Dec 1945. He called his own fishing boat 'Seabarb'.
