Biography

Ignazia Briganti is born around 1768 in Corleone, based on her reported age in 1807, making her only eleven years old when she marries. I estimate she is born around 1759. Ignazia is the daughter of Placido Briganti and Rosa Cimino.

Ignazia marries Vincenzo Giordano on 27 September 1779. Her parents have both died by this time.

Ignazia and Vincenzo have at least twelve children: two sons named Antonio (1780 and 1786), two sons named Francesco (1781 and 1792), three daughters named Carmela Maria (1782, 1798, and 1800), Francesca (1784), Biagio (1789), Calogera (1791), Leoluca (1795), and Carmelo (1796).

The first son named Antonio is born and baptized 7 August 1780, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Vincenzo di Fulco and Gioachina di Fulco, mother and son.[1] Antonio has a brother with the same name, born in 1786, indicating the older boy has died by this time.

The first son named Francesco is born and baptized 7 October 1781. His godparents are Bernardo Ciavarello, who is unmarried, and Serafina Ciavarello, mother and son.[2] Francesco has a brother with the same name, born in 1792, indicating the older boy has died by this time.

The first daughter named Carmela Maria is born and baptized 15 October 1782. Her godparents are Leoluca and Gioachina Profita.[3] Carmela has a sister with the same name, born in 1798, indicating the older girl has died by this time.

Francesca is born and baptized 20 September 1784, named after her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Antonio and Filippa Todaro, a married couple.[4]

The second son named Antonino is born and baptized 13 March 1786. His godparents are Leoluca and Rosa Mannina, a married couple.[5]

Biagio is born and baptized 1 January 1789. His godparents are Vincenzo and Rosa Mancuso, brother and sister, both unmarried.[6]

Calogera is born and baptized 18 June 1791, named after a paternal aunt. Her godparents are Domenico and Francesca Quartararo, a married couple.[7]

The second son named Francesco is born 31 August 1792 and baptized the next day. His godparents are Francesco and Antonina Jannazzo, father and daughter.

Francesco dies 19 September 1792.[8] He is twenty days old.

Leoluca is born 26 May 1795 and baptized the next day, named after his paternal uncle. His godparents are Bernardo and Rosa Ligotino, a married couple.

Carmelo is born and baptized 11 September 1796. His godparents are Girolamo and Giuseppa Monteleone, a married couple.

Carmelo dies on 12 October 1796 at one month of age. This record calls his father Antonino.

The second daughter named Carmela Maria is born and baptized 21 October 1798. Her godparents are Domenico and Sigismonda Merendino, brother and sister, who are both unmarried. She dies on 27 November 1798 at one month of age.

The third Carmela Maria is born and baptized 30 June 1800. Her godparents are Maestro Francesco di Bella and Natala Merendino. She dies on 2 August 1800 at one month of age.

In 1807, Vincenzo, age 49 (b. 1758), lives with his wife, Ignazia, 39 (b. 1768), their son, Antonino, 22 (b. 1785), and his wife, Biagia, 15 (b. 1792), in the Cortile di Bentivegna, in Corleone.

Leoluca and Biagio do not appear in this record. There is no further record of Francesca. Leoluca is presumed to have died, but Biagio is known to be living. He marries Carmela Terrusa on 7 January 1817.

Vincenzo dies at around age 60 (b. 1761) on 16 April 1821. Ignazia survives him.

Biagio dies at age 50 on 26 July 1839. His wife, Carmela, survives him. His parents have both died by this time.
