Daughter of Abial C. and Effie J. (Young) Briggs (1900 census and Maine Birth Records). They had an unnamed child born in Gouldsboro on Sep 25, 1894 in Gouldsboro (their first), followed by Willey, Prescott, and Earle. This is consistent with the 1900 census.

She had previously married Clarence Wood Lewis in 1910.

The 1930 census states that Varnum was first married at age 23 (abt. 1900), and Flora was first married at age 14 (abt. 1915). Both of Flora's parents were born in Maine.
