Biography

Born NE 1/2 Lot 12 Conc 7 Bathurst Twp, Lanark County, Upper Canada, to Stanley Briggs jr and Ann Dean, both born Ireland. Growing up, her family lived across the road from her Briggs grandparents, and her uncle Thomas Briggs and aunt Jane. She and her sisters would have played with cousins Mary and Jane Briggs who were close in age to Elizabeth. After their grandfather died, likely the grandmother came to live with the family, so Elizabeth would have had strong attachment to her Briggs relatives when her father and mother made the decision when she was about 15, to move the family to Lansing Michigan and open a store there. She married 6 Feb 1856 to John Whitely in Augusta Michigan. Died at 414 Washaw Ave South, Lansing Michigan, 30 Dec 1921 ^[1]. The birth and death dates on her burial stone ^[2] do not match other information available.
