Jane was born in Portington, Yorkshire, England, and was baptised nearby in Eastrington in 1825. She was the daughter of James Briggs and Hannah Green[1] and lived in Portington with her parents in 1841[2] and 1851.[3]
At the time of the 1861 census Jane worked as a cook for Charles Briggs in Howden, Yorkshire.[4]
